Regulations on dormitory network usage

National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences
Regulations on Dormitory Network Usage

Origins

  • Since the fall semester of the 1996–1997 academic year, the NTUNHS dormitory networks have connected to the Taiwan Academic Network (commonly referred to as TANet) through computers. No fees were collected during the trial period. Each dormitory bedroom is equipped with a computer network connector that allows one computer to connect to the network.
  • As of the 1998–1999 academic year, student demand for the use of dormitory networks has rapidly increased, and the number of computers in the dormitory region is close to 300. Because more than one computer is typically used in each bedroom, some students do not comply with regulations when connecting to the network, resulting in overloading of the dormitory networks and network interruptions. Therefore, regulations on student dormitory network usage and management were provided to ensure uninterrupted connectivity of the dormitory networks.
  • As of the 2003–2004 academic year, each student has their own exclusive and available connection to the network, which now supports close to 1000 computers. Regulations on student dormitory network usage and management were provided to ensure the uninterrupted connectivity of the dormitory networks.
  • As of the 2014–2015 academic year, the maintenance of the dormitory networks is no longer a service provided on a voluntary basis by the dormitory network manager but is formally designated as the responsibility of the dormitory officers. This change was made to ensure higher-quality and consistent dormitory network maintenance management and services.
  • As of the 2021–2022 academic year, network operations and services for Elegance Building have been outsourced to Chunghwa Telecom.
  • As of the 2022–2023 academic year, network operations and services for Hui-Chih Building and Lan-Hsin Building have been outsourced to Chunghwa Telecom. Maintenance of the dormitory networks is no longer the responsibility of the dormitory network manager. For any concerns regarding dormitory networks, please contact the Student Housing Division of the Office of Student Affairs or the Chunghwa Telecom 24-hour customer service hotline 0800-080-412.

Terms of use

  1. When using the campus network, please follow the network scope of use and abide by the TANet terms of use and the NTUNHS campus network terms of use (Please see NTUNHS Compute Center regulations).
  2. Please turn off your computer if it is to be left idle for 2 hours or longer to save energy; computers may not be left on all day.
  3. Reconfiguring or altering NTUNHS dormitory network equipment without authorization from NTUNHS is strictly prohibited. Those who violate this regulation shall have their rights to the dormitory network revoked permanently.
  4. If a personal computer has abnormal or incorrect software or hardware configurations (such as a spamming virus or network card abnormality) that lead to interruptions in dormitory network connections, NTUNHS reserves the right to suspend the user’s network access until the issue is resolved. This is necessary to safeguard the connectivity of the entire dormitory network.
  5. To ensure the connectivity of the dormitory networks and respect intellectual property rights, file sharing through P2P software is prohibited.
  6. Wireless network services are only available in the dormitory lounges; first-time users must register for wireless access, and each person may register three wireless networks for each campus.

Students’ responsibilities

  1. Students shall prepare their own computer, network card (RJ45 connection), and LEVEL 5 UTP network cable; students shall also install their own network adaptor driver.
  2. Students shall configure their computer and test their network connections on their own until they are able to connect to the network.

Revisions to these terms of use may be made as deemed appropriate and announced.
